Local Wrestlers Bring Home Gold
Prince George, B.C. – A pair of Prince George wrestlers won gold medals at this weekend’s national high school wrestling championships in Windsor Ontario.
Tristina Howse, a grade 12 student and member of the Prince George Secondary School Polars wrestling team, won gold in the 90-kg freestyle category.
Howse, who was nervous heading in after missing much of the year due to injury, figures it was her intense focus that put her over the top.
“I was just thinking this is my last shot, my last chance and I have to do this now. Just a lot of mind preparation. So, I think that really came into play.”
She has now won four medals nationally – this year’s gold plus a bronze and silver last year and a silver the year before.
Howse hopes to continue wrestling competitively including this summer at the Aboriginal Games and next year at the University of Winnipeg.
Prince George’s other gold medal winner was 15-year-old Zenze Stanley-Jones of Kelly Road Secondary School, who won two golds in the cadet girls 90 kg weight class.
She won gold in both freestyle and in the Greco-Roman category.
