Prince George B.C. - It is a sign of the season.

Each year, an evergreen is placed on top of the Coast Inn of the North in Prince George and the number of illuminated lights on the tree show the cash donations made to the Salvation Army’s Christmas campaign.

Yesterday afternoon, a 70 foot Spruce tree arrived   from the woods near Bear Lake, and a crane lifted it to the roof of the hotel.

The lights will be placed on the tree, which will be fully illuminated on the official downtown light up   celebration in mid December, but the tree will not display it’s full lights until the campaign goal has been met.

This is one of my favorite PG Christmas traditions.
Didn't the money raised used to go to support the PGRH NICU? When did that change?
Just read an article on salaries paid to top CEO's of charitable societies or world organizations and the percentage that actually gets to the people that need it.
The CEO for the Salvation Army gets paid the least and about 93% of donations get to the people that need it. They get my support!
This has always been Salvation Army. Gets my support too cause the money stays in PG.
There are several organizations that rate charities on their efficiency (percentage spent on goals as opposed to administration), CEO salaries, etc. A couple are: http://www.charitynavigator.org and http://www.charitywatch.org/. Another, which deals specifically with Christian charities, is: http://www.ministrywatch.com/.
Perhaps we should give a shout out to the crane company that did this? It is usually done by donation and although I have no need for a crane, another company that uses cranes might want to use a donatoin minded company.
Anyway, Thank you to them, for giving us a cool site to look at citywide.
Thank you for the donation of the tree as well. Someone had to go out into the bush at Bear Lake and cut it down and haul it into town.

Thank you to the Coast Hotel Maintenance staff who work for many hours stringing the lights on this tree and winching it into place by hand.

I have watched them brave high winds and bitter cold getting that tree ready for the annual light up. Very few people realize the efforts, the sacrifice and the donation of time required to make this Salvation Tree of Lights a special fundraising event for our community.

And, the Hotel catering staff, who also provide hot beverages and treats for all who come down to show their support each year.

I also appreciate the radio station who does an on location show each year to promote the Salvation Army and their fund raising efforts. And also the newspapers who cover the annual event.

This event has also been supported by the Sweet Adelines, as well as a number of Student choirs who have come down to entertain everyone.

The money raised goes towards the annual Christmas Food Hampers, but also for other times of the year when donations are down.
Sounds like a miracle; a tree somehow made its' way into town, and a crane was there to meet it.
Point being, give a mention to Sterling Crane, and to the co. that provided the tree, it is only fitting.
Thanks Chester, I did not realize the Inn maintenance crew did the work as volunteers.
Anyhow, it is an annual tradition, one that raises money for a good cause.
metalman.
Warmac Ventures is the company that cuts the tree and hauls it to town.
